When it comes to social networking, Facebook is about all I can handle. The incessant amount of time and energy it takes to continually post status updates, to me, isn’t worth whatever it is you’re trying to share (with friends who couldn’t care less; they’re too busy doing the same). Hence my uninstalling the Foursquare app from my smartphone the other day, さようなら!

There is, however, a social app that I find equally as operative as it is addictive: Untappd, the “…mobile web app that allows you to socially share the brew you’re currently enjoying, as well as where you’re enjoying it, with your friends!”

I’ve been a member since July last year, and in that time I’ve become familiar with more beers and breweries than I ever could have otherwise. And because Untappd enables homebrews to be uploaded to its database, I can proudly share my beers with people who genuinely care (or are at least drunk enough to feign interest  ).

But what absolutely endeared me to the app was when a few months ago, Nevitt Reagan, who publishes the blog Beering in Mind, without the slightest provocation, sent me a bottle of beer from my Untappd Wish List: an Urthel Hibernus Quentum Belgian Tripel Ale. Cheers, mate!

Nevitt’s random act of kindness inspired me to take the bottle to Bashamichi Taproom and share it with staff, as the needs of the many outweigh the need of the few – or the one!

Anyway, getting back to Untappd, another reason why I dig the app so much is that the people who run it are uber-cool. Not only is their customer support is friendly and responsive, but the company’s co-founder and CEO, Tim Mather, is also a downright nice bloke. Cheers, all of you!

So I bought a digital infrared thermometer the other day. A brilliant wee gadget it is; just point, click, and -presto!- instant temperature reading. That means no more bending over awkwardly into my chest freezer or fumbling blindly in dark closets with thermometer strips. Winning!

It looks like this:
Digital Infrared Thermometer

The SCAN button does exactly what it says. Push it and it scans the area in front of it, and then displays a reading on the LED screen.

But what does the other button do? At first I thought it was the On/Off button; but no, the SCAN button did that. So I pushed it. Nothing happened. Pushed it again. Again, nothing. Nada.

Hmmm…time to have a look at the instructions:
Mystery Button

⑥ reads (in Japanese): “Mishiyō botan. (Kono botan wa nanimo dōsa shimasen).”
Translation: “Unused button. (This button does absolutely nothing (has no action)).”

Which inevitably raises the question: WTF!? If you’ve got the answer, please let me know.

Still a brilliant wee gadget, though.

Yokohama Brewery

I wanted to give a great big fat CHEERS! to my friends at Yokohama Brewery. The missus and I enjoyed having dinner there last Wednesday; I was particularly honoured and delighted to have been given a tour of their brewing facilities by the head brewer himself, Yu Fukuta.

Fukuta-san, who’s been working at Yokohama Brewery for a year and a half, casually guided me past their twelve fermentation and four conditioning tanks. Currently they produce about 100KL of beer per year, but that number could soon increase. When I asked him what he found most rewarding about his work, he replied, “The process of making beer in itself is fun. Watching beer reach its peak condition makes me happy.”

I highly recommend their Bohemian Pilsner and award winning Hefeweizen, both are available either at their on-site restaurant, Umaya-no-Shokutaku, or at their online shop. Why not visit yourself and support one of the first microbreweries established in Japan, a Yokohama original!
