I’m in the middle of bottling 40+ liters worth of Belgian Strong Ales, but I wanted to share with you a few goodies I picked up last night at Sugaya. If you’ve never been there, go – it’s a wee haven/heaven of beers, and the owner, Yukako, is one of the grooviest people I know.

Quöllfrisch Naturtrüb is a Zwickel/Keller/Landbier beer from the Appenzell region of Switzerland, which is also famous for their Appenzeller cheese. It’s brewed by Brauerei Locher AG, whose Quöllfrisch Hell Lager is generally considered the best beer in Switzerland. The Naturtrüb is a bit hoppier and maltier than the Helles, but is naturally carbonated and unfiltered – it has a slightly cloudy yellow orange color with an enduring white to off-white head. Its aroma contains hints of bread, butter, and grass/hay; its flavor is moderately sweet with fruity notes and a crisp bitterness. An excellent beer with an ABV of 4.8%.

I brought back several bottles from my recent holiday there, and will be bringing one to share at Advanced Brewing’s Advanced Homebrew Meeting on the 27th of this month. Why not come out and have a taste?

Winter Holiday 2010: Beers

One of my personal missions this holiday was to drink as many different kinds of beer as I could (for educational purposes, of course). I’m pleased to say I succeeded in befriending many new styles, blends, brands and breweries.

Here are eight that met the only one, but most important, criterion during my holiday: be sober enough to remember to take a picture. They’re arranged in chronological order of having been drunk, by the way.
