お疲れ様でした!What a brilliant day yesterday – good beer, great friends, and the Nippon Craft Beer Festival to bring it all together. I almost didn’t go for fear of last year’s overcrowded, sold-out beer by the time I got there 9th Real Ale Festival debacle, but this year’s event was ace.

It was nice to be able to walk around without walls of people to plough through, and better yet to hang out comfortably while talking and sharing beer. The only complaint I heard was that the room was a little hot; that, and my personal WTF? The event staff somehow mistakenly never called out my lottery ticket number!

There could have been a larger selection of beers, especially by Japanese breweries, but I only had to ditch one or two bad choices. My favourites included Premium Beer Onidensetsu Akaoni Pale Ale, Swan Lake Beer Imperial Stout, and Hidatakayama Beer Red Bock.

If you were there, post your thoughts and opinions – I’d love to hear from you!

Oh, one more thing, mark your calendars for Goodbeer Faucet’s Grand Opening – 18th December in Shibuya, Tokyo!

Well, it’s Monday morning and I’m still alive; listening to the pitter patter of rain as I recall details from yesterday’s two stellar beer events. The first was Nakameguro Taproom’s “Barley Wine Beer Style Showcase”, which featured a total of eight barley wine beers – four Ganko Oyaji (2008-2011) from Baird Beer, and four from the following guest breweries: Green Flash, Iwate Kura, Stone, and Swan Lake.

The beers ranged from average to amazing, I was particularly taken by the Ganko Oyaji 2008 and Iwate Kura’s Barley Wine, fermented with wine yeast. And hats off to Chef Ishikawa-san, who did an excellent job of creating a menu that both complimented and enhanced the variety of flavours and aromas presented. I couldn’t make Saturday’s English seminar, so I went to Sunday’s in Japanese.

The second, not two hours later, was Advanced Brewing’s Advanced Homebrew Meeting, where a lively crowd of wonderful people – most fellow homebrewers, others beer fans – mixed and mingled while serving and being served food and beers. I had a fantastic time meeting some new people, as well as finally face-to-facing a few Facebook friends.

It was especially gratifying getting swept up in homebrewing geekosity – if you were there, you’ll know what I mean – a special thanks to Aizawa-san for putting it together. I’ll definitely make the meetings a regular gig.

9th Tokyo Real Ale Festival [Review]

I apparently survived Sunday’s 9th Tokyo Real Ale Festival at the Sumida Riverside Hall in Azumabashi, Tokyo. It was a beautiful, sunny, blue sky afternoon and not half as cold as the Friday and Saturday before it. I went in feeling giddy and excited, as I’d been waiting for it since January; I still had vivid good memories of last October’s Nippon Craft Brew Festival.

So I was a little shocked and a lot confused when the first three beers I sampled were nothing short of, well, disappointing. The beer was served too cold, lacked any head or body, and none of them seemed to match their profiles listed on the tasting sheet.

And while the turnout was exceptional and great for the event, it was also far too crowded. Not much fun being shoved around by people trying to dodge people being shoved around. And more people means less beer, which is exactly what happened. By two o’clock, nearly half the beers were SOLD OUT, and I so I missed tasting several that I had come specifically to try.

In the end, I left with a ticket leftover – and thankful for the whisky booth. That’s not to say there wasn’t any good beer – there was, my favourites of the event: Hatachino Nest’s Yuzu Amber, Ise Kadoya’s IIPA, Sagami’s St. Valentine’s Porter, and Swan Lake’s Real Porter.

If anyone had a better experience, please share; I’m not one who likes to leave with a bad taste in my mouth.

Cheers to everyone I met and talked to. See you all at whatever comes next!
